dichotomies evolving. the latest works on paper have a kind of zen vibe to them. very ethereal - like clouds or colored fog. the way the two sides connect, or don’t, is completely random since i paint one side at a time while the other side is masked off. dichotomies reflects the notion that we tend to instinctively judge the people and events of everyday life in a binary way: good/bad, like/unlike, right/wrong, right/left, etc. And that we often hold two different, sometimes conflicting, thoughts in our minds at the same time.

dichotomies/minimal
the initial expression of the dichotomies series was derived from a minimalist approach. i’ve always liked the minimalist artists and the notion that “less is more.” working on smaller pieces of paper enabled me to develop the color relationships quiickly. most of these are 15”x30”, 21”x42”, or 7.5”x15”. acrylic on rag paper. click to enlarge.
in this instance, the paint is a much more liquid application. then blotted with with newsprint to remove layers of paint or “unpaint” the image. the result is tranlucent layers of paint and a much more organic or atmosphereic feeling. these evoke undersea structures, moss, and lichens. these are 21” x 42”, acrylic on rag paper, 2023. click to enlarge.
dichotomies/atmospheric
i tried to stretch what the paint might be able to do. in this case, i thickened it and worked it until it was almost dry. this rendered a great surface texture as well as interesting accidental elements. these are 21” x 42”, acrylic on rag paper, 2023. click to enlarge.
